What Your Dog Wants for the New Year (and Every Day!)
Dogs have wishes and dreams, just like humans. As we kick off a brand new year—especially after the whirlwind of the last one—it’s the perfect time to think about what truly makes our furry companions happy.
I did some “research” (read: I polled a bunch of dogs!) to find out their top goals and desires for 2025. Unsurprisingly, their resolutions are beautifully simple and heartwarming. Dogs are all about the simple things in life—most of which involve you!
Without further ado, here’s what dogs want most for the new year (and, let’s be honest, every single day):
1. More Time with You⏲️
Whether it’s a walk, a cuddle on the couch or just hanging out while you work, your dog treasures every moment by your side.
2. More Treats🍖
It’s no surprise that treats made the list—tasty treats, whether given as a reward or "just because" are a guaranteed way to your dog’s heart!
3. More (Appropriate) Things to Chew🦴
Chewing isn’t just fun for dogs; it’s a natural behavior and a way for them to relieve stress and keep their teeth healthy. Dogs don't want to chew up your stuff, they want great chews and chew toys you're happy for them to have.
4. A Ball or Two⚽
Fetch enthusiasts everywhere agree: you can never have too many balls! Fetch is a terrific form of exercise for your dog and lots of fun to play. It's also one of those activities that has your dog active while you can be stationary so great if you aren't feeling well or are injured.
5. Fun Outings and Adventures (With You)⛰️
As much as dogs love their routines, they also crave novelty and stimulation. Dogs especially love exploring new places with their favorite person: YOU!
6. More Playtime With You⛹️♂️
Tug, chase, fetch or a good old game of hide-and-seek—whatever the game, playtime strengthens your bond and keeps your dog’s mind and body active.
7. To Learn Something New📖
Dogs thrive when they’re challenged mentally. Teaching your pup a new trick or skill is a fun way to enrich their life. Learning new things also builds your dogs confidence and gives both of you another behavior through which to communicate.
8. Grooming (This Was a Hot Debate!)🪥
While some dogs adore being brushed and pampered, others might only tolerate it. Either way, regular grooming keeps your pup healthy and comfortable so it's an important activity. It also gives you a chance to check your dog for any physical changes you may need to make their veterinarian aware of.
9. A Comfy Bed or Blanket of Their Own🛏️
A cozy spot to curl up is a must-have for any dog. The best dog spots are ones where they know their privacy and need for alone time will be respected.
10. The Right Amount of Time With Doggy Friends🐕
Social butterflies love the chance to romp around with all the other dogs. Choosier pups want to play with just a few specific canine pals. Of course there are dogs who don't want time with other dogs at all and that's just fine! Those dogs are happy just to hang out with humans (or just their own person). Wherever your dog lands on this spectrum, be sure group play dynamics are safe and enjoyable for all.
11. More Time With You (Yes, Again!)💓
If there’s one thing that stands out on this list, it’s that nothing matters more to your dog than spending time with you! Strike a balance of active adventurous time together and quiet cuddle time together to make your dog as happy as they can be.
A Simple Truth: Love and Time
If you noticed a trend here, you’re absolutely right. Far more than toys, treats or adventures, your dog’s greatest wish is for time and attention from the person they love most—you.
Honestly, isn’t that what we all want deep down? More time and attention from the ones we hold dearest?
This year, consider making time for the simple moments that mean so much to your dog: a few extra minutes of play, a longer cuddle or an extra walk. These little gestures make their world—and yours—brighter.
